I've been lucky enough to call many places around the world "home" but home truly is where the heart is. Whether it's a weekend in the woods, or years abroad, I always think about my large extended family and friends and how they've always been such a positive influence in my life. Spent the New Year working on the rig! My dad and I installed some Firestone air bags and @steve.ssahaus over at @ssahaus killed it with the Body Mount Chop! (I was getting annoyed by the rubbing and Steve does beautiful work - his attention to detail is amazing!)

If you haven’t seen @bustabeatgeorge YouTube video of his BMC check it out!

Huge shout out to the guys @ssahaus and @overland_trail_enthusiasts - really great group of guys and highly recommended especially if you’re in So. Cal!

As Thanksgiving approaches I’ve been reflecting about all that I’m thankful for. I’m thankful for good friends and family. (The ones that always believe in my dreams and ambitions.) I’m thankful for this great community of people that love the outdoors…and the generosity and kindness of strangers. And I’m thankful to all of those that have helped turn my dreams into reality.

One of those dreams was to explore more and get out on the open road. I’ve always wanted to build an adventure rig but knew little on where to start.

Then I met some local Colorado guys that opened my eyes to what’s possible.
People like the Taco Twonz (Tuan and Toan) and @runnin4tacos
Micah and Drew at @uptopoverland
And Chad at @g.o.a.t._offroad_trailer

They’re the ones that have helped turn my crazy 3D renderings into a reality.

So one of the reasons I would love to get the @roamadventureco removable mounts coupled with their 83 liter case is because my rig is also my every day vehicle.

So as we all know the second we start adding weight and drag our "smiles per gallon" go up but so does fuel consumption. It's one of the reasons I have a removable dual battery in my truck bed and why everything in my bed is modular (aka removeable)

Being able to remove weight when "mall crawling" and also creating space when doing home depot and costco runs allows my truck to kind of be well...a truck.

Do you guys rock rifle cases or cargo boxes on your rig?

I'm starting a new series called "Well that's handy" where I talk about some of the handy things that I rely on or find helpful during my travels. Today we'll take a look at the @pelican Vault cases that I have mounted to my @uptopoverland alpha rack.

I chose these cases due to Pelican's reputation as a case maker, their lighter weight, weather proof ability and cost. Originally I got them to haul lighting and rigging equipment for a video shoot I was doing in Tennessee last year and now they serve as my camping and recovery gear cases. I've loved the durability of these as I hang on them and sit on them constantly. The thinner and lighter weight of these cases allows me to stuff more inside (similar sized cases have a reduced capacity due to thicker walls). The large latches and easy push buttons allow for me to access everything even with gloves on.

Since purchasing them I've done a little mod by adding gas struts to keep the lid up. This in my opinion is a must have when the cases are mounted high like this. It allows for ease of access as well as closing. A company that I am really interested in is @roamadventureco ( I have one of their awnings that I'll talk more about later). They offer a series of cases with gas struts, molle panels and accessory organization. They even just announced a removable system that allows you to easily put on and take off the cases (mine is permanently fixed with bolts.) Those features look really appealing and hopefully I can try those out one day.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been camping. Whether it was Koke’e or the Beach at Salt Pond in Kauai as a kid or Yosemite and Sequoia as a teenager and now the whole US as an adult, I’ve always felt more at home on the road and in nature.

Ive been doing this “overlanding” thing since I got my drivers license 26 years ago. (Right when I turned 16 me and a couple buddies did an epic road trip for over a week camping in Yosemite- shout out to our parents for allowing that) Shortly after that I began camping out of the back of my parents Ford Explorer and 10 years later bought my Jeep that I continued to sleep out of when I moved to Colorado.

I got the tacoma in the fall of 2019 and I’ve been back and forth to both the East and west coasts a number of times now and I struggled with not being able to sleep in the back like I did my previous vehicles. I know I could have gotten a 4Runner but I’ve always loved trucks growing up and never had one so now was the time.

Enter the @gazelletents pop up tent. This thing was a game changer. Before that I had a tent that mounted to the back of my bed. When traveling I had to weigh time vs. convenience vs. price and the truck bed camp setup was cheap but a little slow for how I was traveling.

The Gazelle t3 was perfect for deploying quickly but it does take up a lot of room in the truck bed. Also, having to clear out and flatten a site and then move everything you need to the tent is a tad annoying after 10 hours of driving.

I’ve always wanted a rooftop tent. I mean you go on Instagram and see them in every IG overlanding account. But it wasn’t until after using it for a week straight that I truly could appreciate it (and it’s cost.)

It’s been 3 weeks and a couple thousand miles on the road and the adventure continues.

Not many people understand my NEED to hit the road and explore. I’m fortunate to have a handful of special people in my life that do and I love that I’m able to travel to see them.

If you know me you know I shoot a ton of photos and video but rarely ever share. I think before it was because I felt like they were mine and mine alone or that I felt like there needed to be more of a narrative to share (my professional work for the longest time involves story telling) but the more I post the more people have had questions as it relates to their rigs or their own adventures and I would love to help or inspire others with their own pursuits.

With that I’m hoping to share more to help others answer some of their questions as I continue with my own build and my own adventures.

I’ll definitely jump back and share my old adventures as well as my current ones and what’s planned for the future!

Here’s to another 3 weeks on the road followed by maybe 3 more months? Happy travels everyone!
